About Calf Strain
A calf strain is a partial tear of the gastrocnemius or soleus, common during sprinting, hills, or sudden acceleration. Physical therapy rebuilds strength and push-off power so you can return to running without recurring setbacks.
Expected Recovery Window
Grade 1: 1–3 weeks. Grade 2: 3–6 weeks. Grade 3: 6–12+ weeks.
Common Symptoms
Sudden sharp pain or tightness in the calf; pain with push-off, running, or jumping; tenderness to touch; swelling or bruising in moderate strains; difficulty doing a single-leg calf raise.
Common Causes
Sudden acceleration or sprinting; hill running; rapid increase in running volume; fatigue late in workouts; inadequate calf strength or plyometric preparedness; limited ankle mobility shifting load to the calf.
How We Treat Calf Strain
We start with pain-limited loading and restore ankle mobility, then rebuild calf strength through progressive calf raise loading for both gastrocnemius and soleus. As tolerance improves, we add plyometrics and return-to-run progressions based on strength and hop benchmarks, not just time.
