About AC Joint Sprain
A separated shoulder can limit lifting, reaching, and contact sport, but most recover well without surgery. Physical therapy rebuilds shoulder strength and guides safe return to training. The goal is pain-free overhead use and confident sport participation.
Expected Recovery Window
Grade 1: 2–4 weeks. Grade 2: 4–8 weeks. Grade 3+: 8–16+ weeks depending on sport demands.
Common Symptoms
Pain at the top of the shoulder; swelling or bump; pain with cross-body reach; pain with pressing or overhead lifting; tenderness at AC joint.
Common Causes
Fall onto the shoulder; collision/contact sport; landing from a jump; bike crash.
