McKenzie River Trail
The McKenzie River Trail runs 25+ miles through mossy old-growth, lava rock, and blue pools. Known for its waterfalls and technical tread, it’s a bucket-list route for long trail runs, point-to-point adventures, and year-round training escapes.
Winding through old-growth forests, lava fields, and alongside crystal-clear water, the McKenzie River Trail is a bucket-list destination for trail runners in Oregon. Just under an hour from Eugene, this 26-mile point-to-point route offers a one-of-a-kind running experience—cool air, soft tread, and stunning scenery at every turn.
Most runners start at Carmen Reservoir or Clear Lake and follow the river downstream. This upper section is popular for good reason: turquoise pools, waterfalls, and shady forest keep it runnable even in summer. But the lower sections, from Trail Bridge to McKenzie Bridge, offer quieter miles and a more remote feel. Don’t miss the chance to explore these lesser-traveled stretches—they're ideal for long runs, solitude, and deep-woods immersion.
The trail is mostly non-technical with rolling elevation, but volcanic rock segments and occasional roots demand attention. Shuttling with friends or staging a car can turn your day into a rewarding one-way adventure.
Bring plenty of water and layers—the weather can shift quickly in the Cascades. For trail runners craving flow, beauty, and a break from the city, the McKenzie River Trail delivers. And the further you go, the more peaceful—and magical—it becomes.
