Dorris Ranch
A favorite for easy loops, bark footing, and warmup or cooldown sessions. Often used by local track teams.
Dorris Ranch is both a historic landmark and a beloved trail system, blending cultural heritage with riverside recreation in Springfield. Established in 1898, it is home to the nation’s oldest working filbert orchard, but for runners and walkers, it’s best known for its mix of orchard lanes, forested paths, and access to the Middle Fork Willamette River. Managed by Willamalane, the ranch offers an experience that’s part heritage site, part trailhead, and part training ground.
The orchard rows create wide, runnable paths that are flat and fast, making the area ideal for tempo runs, family walks, and year-round workouts. Dorris Ranch is also part of the U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon course, with its “Fast Forest” section drawing attention as one of the speediest stretches in the country. Beyond the orchards, wooded singletrack follows the river, weaving past wildflowers and shaded groves that keep runs cool even on warm summer days.
Parking is available at the main entrance off South 2nd Street, with restrooms and interpretive signage on-site. The trails are well-used but rarely feel crowded, offering a balance of community activity and quiet moments along the river. With its unique mix of history, flat runnable terrain, and Olympic legacy, Dorris Ranch is a Springfield staple for both daily training and scenic outings.
