Spencer Butte
Steep, rocky climbs leading to a 360° summit. Combine with Ridgeline for long runs or use as a quick power hike workout.
Towering at 2,058 feet, Spencer Butte is Eugene’s most iconic peak—and a must-do for trail runners and hikers alike. Located at the south end of town, this forested butte offers a mix of steep climbs, technical footing, and rewarding summit views that stretch from the Cascades to the Coast Range.
There are multiple route options to the top, but the Main Trail from the Spencer Butte Trailhead off Willamette Street is the most direct: a 1.7-mile climb with roughly 800 feet of elevation gain. It’s a favorite for runners looking to add vertical challenge to their weekly routine. The last quarter mile is rocky and steep, making for a true mountain feel right in city limits.
Prefer a longer outing? Link to Spencer Butte via the Ridgeline Trail system from Fox Hollow, Dillard, or Blanton Trailheads for a flowy, wooded approach with gradual elevation gain and more mileage.
Hikers love Spencer for its quick escape, natural beauty, and 360° views—especially at sunrise or sunset. While the summit can get busy on weekends, midweek mornings offer more solitude.
Whether hiking or running, Spencer Butte delivers a classic Eugene trail experience—elevation, challenge, and beauty just minutes from home.
