Alton Baker Park: Eugene’s Riverside Greenway with Paths, Ponds, and Wildlife

Climb Stronger. Reduce Injury.

Alton Baker Park

Alton Baker Park features paved and gravel paths along the Willamette, ponds, meadows, and wildlife areas. It’s Eugene’s hub for walking, running, cycling, and river recreation, with miles of trails linking into downtown and beyond.

Alton Baker Park is Eugene’s largest and most versatile city park, stretching more than 400 acres along the banks of the Willamette River. As the heart of Eugene’s riverfront, it blends recreation, nature, and community in a way that invites daily routines and big events alike. Paved and gravel paths connect downtown, Autzen Stadium, and nearby neighborhoods, while wood-chip Pre’s Trail offers a forgiving surface beloved by runners of all levels. Families wander to the duck pond and native plant gardens; cyclists link uninterrupted miles along the river; and birders scan for herons, osprey, and wintering waterfowl. Open lawns host picnics, classes, and festivals, yet quiet corners remain for reflection beside flowing water. Because the park sits at the confluence of several greenway paths, it serves as the front door to Eugene’s trail network—an easy place to start a jog, meet friends for a lunchtime walk, or stage a long ride across town. The setting also carries history and culture: Pre’s Trail honors the legacy of Steve Prefontaine, the University of Oregon’s iconic runner, and continues to welcome athletes from around the world. With year-round access, abundant wildlife, and a useful mix of paved, gravel, and soft-surface routes, Alton Baker Park embodies the city’s outdoor spirit. It is equally suited to training and meandering, to community gatherings and quiet solitude. In every season the river shapes the experience—cool shade in summer, misty mornings in fall, bright reflections in winter—and reminds visitors why the Willamette is the heart of Eugene.
