Moon Mountain

Moon Mountain is Eugene’s wild escape—undeveloped trails through oak woodlands, fir forest, and open meadows. Expect rough tread, seasonal wildflowers, and sweeping valley views on runnable ridges just beyond the city’s southeast edge.

Moon Mountain is Eugene’s wildest in-town escape, an undeveloped ridgeline on the city’s southeast edge that feels more like backcountry than neighborhood green space. Managed as part of the Ridgeline corridor, it offers oak savanna, Douglas fir forest, and meadows alive with seasonal wildflowers. The trails here are raw and lightly maintained, making it a favorite for adventurous runners and hikers who want solitude, technical terrain, and sweeping views without leaving town.

The climb to the ridge is steady, mixing shaded forest stretches with open grassy slopes that reveal big views of the southern Willamette Valley. On clear days, the Cascades frame the horizon. Trail runners use Moon Mountain for hill repeats, tempo work on rough tread, and as a connector with the larger Ridgeline system. Because the terrain is rugged, footing can be uneven, but that’s part of its draw—it’s a place to test your strength, balance, and focus.

Access is limited, with small roadside pullouts on 30th Avenue and Moon Mountain Drive. There are no developed trailheads, parking lots, or restrooms, so it requires a bit more preparation. For those willing to seek it out, Moon Mountain delivers a “wild escape” within city limits—a reminder that rugged adventure is still woven into Eugene’s everyday landscape.
