Skinner Butte

Skinner Butte offers steep, rocky climbs and wooded paths right above downtown Eugene. Perfect for quick hill repeats, fast laps, and sunset views, it’s a small but mighty trail system with big payoff and easy access minutes from the riverfront.

Skinner Butte rises just north of downtown Eugene, offering one of the city’s quickest and most iconic trail escapes. Though modest in size, the butte’s mix of steep climbs, wooded paths, and rocky viewpoints provides a surprising variety of experiences within minutes of the Willamette Riverfront. For runners, walkers, and families, it’s the perfect destination for a quick workout, an evening stroll, or a short climb with big rewards.

The main trail climbs directly to the summit, where sweeping views stretch across Eugene, the valley, and the surrounding hills. Runners often use the butte for hill repeats, pushing the short but steep ascent as a workout before looping back into downtown or along the Ruth Bascom River Path. Alternative routes wrap around the butte’s flanks, offering shaded singletrack beneath oak and Douglas fir, with gentler grades that are runnable and accessible for all abilities.

Parking is available at the base near RiverPlay Park or at the summit, making it easy to fit Skinner Butte into a busy schedule. On sunny evenings, the summit fills with sunset watchers, but step onto the wooded trails and you’ll find quiet pockets away from the crowd.

Compact, accessible, and full of character, Skinner Butte is more than just a landmark—it’s a reminder that trail running and outdoor adventure can be woven into everyday life in Eugene.
