Thurston Hills
Thurston Hills delivers a close-to-town wilderness feel with forested singletrack, switchbacks, and ridge views. Popular with runners, hikers, and riders, it’s a go-to for quick elevation gain, flowy descents, and after-work laps.
Thurston Hills is Springfield’s closest taste of wilderness, a trail system that delivers big forest energy just minutes from town. Managed by Willamalane, it combines winding singletrack, technical switchbacks, and ridge-line views with the convenience of quick access from the city. For runners and riders alike, it’s a go-to destination for workouts that balance challenge with proximity.
The main trail climbs steadily from the 79th Street trailhead into a mix of shaded forest and open clearings. Short switchbacks keep the grade honest, and once on the ridge, views stretch across the Willamette Valley toward the Cascades. The singletrack itself is a mix of smooth, runnable stretches and rockier sections that demand more focus, making it a versatile training ground. It’s a favorite spot for hill intervals, after-work laps, and weekend outings where you want elevation gain without leaving Springfield.
Beyond running, Thurston Hills is shared with hikers and mountain bikers, giving it a lively, multi-use feel. The trail system is well marked and maintained, with seasonal wildflowers brightening the open slopes in spring and dense canopy providing shade in summer. Parking is available at the main trailhead, though it fills quickly on weekends, and access is free.
With its combination of steep climbs, flowing descents, and ridge-line rewards, Thurston Hills stands out as Springfield’s homegrown adventure zone—a place where everyday training and outdoor exploration meet.
